What is the Paleo Diet?

The Paleo Diet has received a lot of attention in the past couple of years and is one of the most Googled terms when people want to change their eating habits.  So what exactly is the Paleo or Primal Diet?

In a nutshell, it means going back to eating real, whole, unprocessed foods.  Michelle Tam of the award winning website and cookbooks, Nom Nom Paleo, describes the core tenets of the diet well:

The Paleo Diet Rules

Eat whole, unprocessed, nutrient-dense, nourishing foods, most importantly a variety of seasonal fresh vegetables of every color. Add in grass-fed and pastured meats and eggs, as well as wild-caught seafood, while enjoying fruit, nuts, and seeds in moderation.

Avoid foods that will harm us by causing systemic inflammation, wrecking your gut, or derailing your natural metabolic processes. Abstain from toxic, pro-inflammatory foods like gluten-containing grains, legumes, sugar, artificial sweeteners and the laboratory-concocted Frankenfoods found in the middle aisles of your neighborhood supermarket.
