FAQs

What will I feel while receiving my acupuncture treatment?

Acupuncture needles are sterile one-time-use-only disposable needles that are very fine and flexible, about the diameter of a human hair. Needles are not usually felt at all and sometimes they may illicit a sensation usually described as tingling, a sense of warmth, pressure or even a slight flow of energy at the point(s). These mild sensations quickly subside after insertion.

A few minutes after the needles are inserted, most clients report feeling a sense of deep mind and body relaxation. Many often fall asleep, and awaken once the needles are removed; feeling very calm and refreshed. It is common to experience a very restful night’s sleep the evening after a treatment.

What types of needles are used?

Most people who have never had acupuncture are surprised at how small the needles are. All needles are made of stainless steel and are NOT hollow. They vary in length and thickness. All our acupuncture needles are pre-packaged and sterilized. Needles are never reused. For children or those uncomfortable with needles, a blunt probe can be used to stimulate the points without breaking the skin.

What kind of relief can I expect after my treatment?

Each client has a unique response. Many experience total or partial relief from their symptoms. Depending on the severity of the condition, this relief may last or the symptoms may return, generally at a less intense level.

How should I prepare for my acupuncture treatment with Karen?

We recommend that you come in prepared to talk about your health concerns and bring any questions you might have for Karen. She will be happy to discuss them with you.

While it is best to wear loose, comfortable clothing, we have light blankets in case you need to disrobe.

For optimal results, have a light meal within a few hours before your session as well as drinking some water. Being dehydrated, hungry or too full can diminish the effects of your treatment.

What should I do after an acupuncture treatment?

You may feel a little light-headed after your treatment. If so, please have a seat in the reception room or take a short walk around our building. In a few minutes, you will feel relaxed and clear-headed.

We recommend that you refrain from physical exertion immediately after your treatment. In particular, do not overuse the area that is being treated. This can cause tenderness and sensitivity to the area, and irritate your condition.

How many treatments will I need?

Your response to acupuncture treatment depends on a variety of factors:

  • The intensity and nature of your condition
  • The length of time you have had this condition
  • The general state of your health
  • Your willingness to participate in the healing process

For most chronic conditions, we prescribe 4-6 treatments, initially. At the end of this course, Karen will evaluate your progress and advise you on the next steps.
