Will Obamacare Cover Acupuncture?
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) or Obamacare allows states to choose acupuncture as a required essential health benefit to be included in private insurance plans. The federal government is giving states a wide latitude in determining what are required health benefits in private insurance plans including acupuncture and wellness.
California may soon require acupuncture to become a required insurance benefit by private insurers pending the outcome of the two new bills based on an insurance plan formulated by Kaiser Permanente. This plan would include acupuncture with a co-pay of $30 for treatment of chronic pain management and the control of nausea.
The move to include acupuncture in healthcare benefits reflects a growing trend towards its popularity, backed by modern research with support from insurers as a cost-effective modality.
